In recent weeks, members of Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute (GEII) had the privilege of participating in two significant events that reflect the vibrant and evolving landscape of Christian unity in the United States. These moments—one centered on future-facing collaboration, the other a celebration of long-standing ecumenical leadership—offered both inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose for all involved.
Gathering at the St. Nicholas National Shrine: NCC Impact Week

The first of these events took place at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine (World Trade Center). This sacred space, steeped in history and beautifully restored in recent years, served as the setting for the National Council of Churches (NCC) Impact Week—an ecumenical convening of Christian leaders from across the country.
Dr. Aaron Hollander, Executive Director of GEII, attended the opening session, joining leaders from a wide spectrum of Christian traditions. Among them was the Rev. Dr. Vashti Murphy McKenzie, President and General Secretary of the NCC. Dr. McKenzie’s leadership has begun a dynamic new chapter for the council, emphasizing both justice and spiritual renewal.
In addition to hearing from Dr. McKenzie, attendees were welcomed by representatives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, including His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America. The panel of opening speakers reflected the rich diversity of voices within the ecumenical movement, united in a shared commitment to reconciliation, common witness, and the healing of divisions. They addressed the theme, “Re-Building Bridges: The Role of Religious Communities During a Time of Crisis in Multilateralism,” their reflections grounded in the scripture, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).
A Tribute at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine

GEII staff also traveled to the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan to honor the Very Rev. Patrick Malloy, outgoing Dean of the Cathedral, whose retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the life of this historic Episcopal institution.
The Cathedral, resplendent in multicolored lighting, served as a majestic backdrop for the celebration. Attendees included clergy and ecumenical leaders from multiple traditions, all gathered to express gratitude for Dean Malloy’s ministry and his unwavering commitment to ecumenical engagement.
Dean Malloy has been a longstanding friend and collaborator with GEII, participating in dialogues, educational programming, and shared efforts to promote unity among Christians and fraternity among all people. His presence has been a steadying and prophetic voice in interchurch work in New York and beyond.

Among those pictured with Dr. Hollander and Dean Malloy during the celebration are Rev. Jared Stahler (ELCA), Rev. Ryan Muldoon (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York), and Bishop Irinej (Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America)—a visible sign of the rich ecumenical network fostered through decades of trust-building and shared vision.
Reflecting on a Shared Mission

These events underscore the same central truth: Christian unity is not a theoretical aspiration, but a lived, relational commitment. Whether in the form of national gatherings for collaborative action or personal tributes to ecumenical champions, the work of Christian unity is sustained through relationships, mutual respect, and shared hope.
GEII is proud to continue fostering these spaces of encounter—both grand and intimate—where bonds are strengthened and the vision of Christ’s prayer “that they may all be one” (John 17:21) is more deeply realized.
