2027 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Theme Announced

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom”

(Luke 12:32)

The theme for the 2027 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was selected by the Irish Episcopal Conference and the Irish Council of Churches, reflecting a journey from division toward peace and reconciliation that offers a powerful witness to Christians around the world.

Drawn from Luke’s Gospel, the theme invites Christians in times of collapsing human institutions to place their trust in God’s care and in His promise of the Kingdom. Reflecting on the image of the “little flock,” Fr. Jim Loughran, SA, notes that sheep are dependent upon their shepherd for guidance, protection, and sustenance. This image reminds us that without God at the center of our lives, we can easily wander into fear, division, and self-preservation when the world’s disarray threatens our sense of security.

Jesus’ words come to us amid his teaching about worry, anxiety, and misplaced faith in the vanishing treasures of human life. Rather than allowing fear of loss to drive us toward isolation, competition, or exclusion, Christ calls His followers to trust in God’s providence and to care for one another as members of a single flock. This conversion of heart, Fr. Jim writes, is “the foundation of reconciliation and an essential step toward visible Christian unity.”

First observed at Graymoor in 1908 by Servant of God Father Paul Wattson, SA, and Mother Lurana White, SA, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has grown into a worldwide movement, uniting millions of Christians in prayer for the unity for which Christ prayed on the night before He died: “That they all may be one.”

Resources for the 2027 observance will be available this fall from the GEII website. In the meantime, churches and communities are encouraged to begin planning for a meaningful celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January 2027.
